Tension pneumocephalus

  • Like tension pneumothorax, causes pressure effect to the underlying brain.
  • Tension pneumocephalus most commonly occurs following drainage of subdural collections.
  • Is a neurosurgical emergency
  • Radiographic features
    – Mount fuji sign (as in the diagram)
    – Presence of air compressing the underlying brain
  • Treatment: emergent neurosurgical decompression using needle aspiration, craniotomy etc
