Superior and inferior lumbar hernias

Superior Lumbar Triangle (Grynfeltt) – the deeper of the two


  • Medial: quadratus lumborum
  • Lateral: internal oblique
  • Base: aponeurosis of transversalis muscle & transversalis fascia
  • Roof: external oblique and lattisimus dorsi


Inferior lumbar triangle (Petit): more superficial of the two

  • Anteriorly; external oblique
  • Posteriorly: lattisimus dorsi
  • Inferiorly: iliac crest

Lumbar hernias occur through defects in the lumbar muscles or the posterior fascia, below the 12th rib and above the iliac crest.
